Manchester United prepare £16.5m bid for Marko Marin - the 'German Messi'

Manchester United are ready to make a £16.5 million move for Werder Bremen star Marko Marin at the end of the season, Goal.com UK can reveal.

Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to beat a host of rival Premier League clubs to the signing of the winger, who has been dubbed the ‘German Lionel Messi’.

Marin has attracted interest from Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool but United have taken pole position in the race for his signature by indicating they are preparing a summer bid.

Ferguson is believed to be willing to spend £16.5m to sign the youngster, whose contract at Werder Bremen expires in 2013 and is largely expected to move to a bigger club.

United are looking to rebuild their squad due to the impending retirements of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes and have identified the 21-year-old as one of their prime targets.

Bremen are reluctant to sell their star attacker after Mesut Oezil’s departure for Real Madrid in the summer but Marin has privately welcomed interest from England.

Ferguson will continue to watch him for Bremen this season but has ruled out a January move as he plans to conduct most of his business next summer.

The Scot could have as much as £50m to spend as he rebuilds his ageing squad and is also targeting a goalkeeper and a central midfielder.

Marin has made a name for himself with his direct dribbling, creative passing and eye for goal, mainly from a starting position on the left.

He has been the shining light in a Bremen side that has had a torrid season so far and sits just 11th in the Bundesliga. He caught the eye in England when he scored the equaliser in his side’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham in the Champions League in September.

He signed for Bremen from Borussia Moenchengladbach for €8.5m (£7.2m) in June 2009 and has become one of the hottest properties in German football.

Marin comes from a Bosnian family but decided to play his international football for Germany, where he has lived since he was two.

He has been capped 15 times for Germany and scored one goal.
